The Record Plant in Sausalito was opened on October 28, 1972 by Gary Kellgreen and Chris Stone. Both had already opened studios under The Record Plant name in New York City in 1968 and Los Angeles in 1969. After opening, The Record Plant in Sausalito soon became known as one of the top four recording studios in the San Francisco Bay Area. Artists who have recorded at the studio include: Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead, Greg Allman, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Huey Lewis and the News, Sammy Hagar, Kenny G, Mariah Carey, Paris, Michael Bolton, Luther Vandross, Jerry Harrison, Chris Isaak, the Dave Matthews Band, Papa Wheelie, Deftones, Booker T. Jones and Santana. The New York studio closed in 1987 and the Sausalito studio closed in 2008.
