On 8th April 2023 a group of radio amateurs from the US mounted an expedition to Ship Island.

The team included operators from Baldwin and Mobile Counties in Alabama (KN4NAF, K5LDA, K4EES, KA4CSGM, WE5TM, KM4YRM, KO4DMR, K5RMD and K4MR).

The group was on the island from15:30Z to 19:00Z and while on the island used the callsign ā€˜W5Sā€™ and was active on CW, SSB and Digital modes across the 20m, 15m, 12m and 10m amateur radio bands.

Ship Island which is 12 miles off the coast of Mississippi is a barrier island, it is the site of a historic fort (Fort Massachusetts).
