The 250-yard tunnel is the only one on the Ashby Canal. Its southern entrance is near No.2 Main Street in the village of Snarestone and its northern entrance is near Snarestone Lodge on the Meashan Road.

Snarestone Tunnel

The Snarestone Tunnel carries the Ashby Canal through the ridge on which the village of Snarestone sit and runs at a right-angle to the direction of the canal.

Both tunnel entrances are Grade II listed by Historic England and are grandly built of stone, although the tunnel itself is constructed from brick. The stonework of the entrances displays a surface pattern of dense by irregular lines giving a rusticated appearance. In plan the entrances are concave with a depressed arch over the canal with an indecipherable inscription tablet above.
