Song-Kul

Song-Kul (StreetView)
Song-Kul at an altitude of 3016 metres is in a depression between the inner spurs of the Tien Shan Mountain range in the northern Naryn region of Kyrgyzstan. Its name means ‘Following Lake’ in Kyrgyz.

Song-Kul is the second largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and is the largest freshwater lake in the country. It is 29km in length and 18km in width. It is however quite shallow reaching depths of 13.2metres. The surface area of the lake is c.270km2.

The lake is surrounded by vast areas of virgin pasture where there are herds of horse which are descendant of the wild horses which range over much of the northern Eurasia.

Due to the altitude of the Lake the water is frozen for much of the year and indeed the lake is fed by a glacier.
