In newer birds eye view scenes, a figure-8 course can be seen which was added in 2008. During a school bus figure-8 race in May 2009, one bus crashed through the retaining wall, causing minor injuries to 11 spectators. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk2SzpAD3SM
A group of cars can be seen in a circle on the main runway in an east view... almost as if they are being shown how to get through the cones. Nice find, kjfitz.
Repairs to the washed out section of land and roadway were completed in November 2008. The nearby dam was also improved to prevent a future breach. The lake is slowly taking in water and should be back to normal by spring 2009.
In a January 2009 visit to the area, I noticed the "HawkQuarters" name is gone from the building, replaced by "Blackhawks Store" http://blackhawksstore.com
After the Guinness Book of World Records was bought by a Canadian businessman in 2008, the steel reinforced stick in Duncan, BC, was declared the World's Largest in July 2008.
The stick in Eveleth remains the largest one piece wooden stick in the world.
It should be noted that the building seen in this map is a movie theater and shopping center which opened in 2001. The Montreal Forum hockey arena was gutted and converted into this complex after it closed in 1996. The Forum was most famous for hosting NHL hockey games from 1924-96 (Canadiens and Maroons).
This building was the Kenosha Public Museum from 1933-2001. It reopened as the Dinosaur Discovery Museum in 2006 after the new Public Museum opened near the lakefront.
It also features the Carthage Institute of Paleontology. Visitors can watch paleontologists at work through a glass wall.
I've seen old photos (drawings?) of the building being moved from it's old location in 1933.
The track reopened for one event in 2008 - the 35th annual Turkey Derby held in November. The owners agreed to lease the track to the former track manager for that one race. Will it open again in 2009?
It would be a '68. I never knew that era of Cutlasses to have horizontal tail lights, but they did for one year. My family had a '71 when I was a kid. I loved that car.
Thanks for the heads up, kjfitz. After cruising around the city, I've found that almost all of the single high resolution scenes are in intersections, perhaps a precursor to google filling in the points in between with new footage in the near future.
There are some stretches of road that are completely covered in high resolution... the 7th Street Bridge, for example.
After looking at this in Street View, I don't think it's a mail box - just a cool way to display a model plane. There are two conventional mail boxes at the other driveway entrance to this ranch. Another model plane can be seen at the other driveway entrance in Street View.
Featuring two ice rinks, it was renamed "Anaheim Ice" after Disney sold it along with their NHL team to new owners in 2005. This is the training facility for the Anaheim Ducks.
It's an amphibious Duck - a former military vehicle converted into a tourist ride. The Ducks at the Wisconsin Dells do some fun off-roading when not on the water. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DUKW
Looks like I posted this just in time. Today's new release of birds eye view scenery covers this area, and it shows the hillside after the landslide has been cleaned up.
I agree, it's an Excalibur. I knew a guy who assembled them back in the 80's. I remember him saying many of their cars sold to guys from the Chicago area, where this one is driving.
Yep, I posted that football maze last year: http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/33679/
I put this truck maze up seperately because that map already has an old Yahoo! thumbnail of a Bush vs. Kerry maze. I live in this area, and the Bears/Packers fan base is just about evenly split.
The more info link is no longer good. The farm stopped doing activities such as the maze after 2006. A better more info link (for now) is: http://www.fairwynfarms.com/index2.html
It looks like the Street View car slid off the road. Looking behind the car, you can see the car's tracks in the middle of the road and an abrupt path to the shoulder. Go back a few scenes, and it appears that the driver may have briefly crossed the center line. Go back several frames, and you can see the Street View car was driving much faster than the SUV he/she was following.
I've played on this one during a family outing. A very simple flat course without many challenges. I've been kicked out of their go-kart track for aggressive driving. http://kastlepark.com
The Americans captured three of the six BMX medals in Beijing. Mike Day won the silver and Donny Robinson claimed the bronze in the men's race. Jill Kintner won the bronze in the women's race.
Taylor is the founder and former chairman of Strix - "the world's leading manufacturer of controls and cordless interfaces for kettles, jugs and a wide range of water boiling appliances."
Two years after it closed, and nothing has been done with the land. The track's concession and scoring buildings are still standing, as are the farm buildings on the southern part of the property. The view in Google Street View (from 2007) is no different than what I saw yesterday.
"The most dramatic scene in Indiana Thursday night is at the Gary-Chicago International Airport, reports CBS 2 Northwest Indiana Bureau Chief Pamela Jones...
After submitting this map, I found three more BEV scenes with bands in this parade. Follow this road (Penn St.) east to 11th. Certain north and south views show bands on 11th.
There are decal kits on the market to turn any Beetle into a 'Herbie'. Note - the one in the Streetview scene is missing the red and blue stripes on the roof and the rear.
Still under construction in Google's Streetviews. The exterior walls and glass panels are almost completed. It is scheduled to open on August 30, 2008, three years after the project broke ground.
