Columbus Drive, west of Grant Park, is part of the area used for Taste of Chicago (an annual 10 day event). Something is going on at Grant Park (including two concerts), but it does not extend onto Columbus Drive.
In reaction to the death of driver Scott Kalitta in June 2008, the NHRA shortened the races from 1/4 mile to 1000 feet for the nitro divisions beginning with this event in July.
It's a quarter midget race track previously used by the Washington Quarter Midget Association (www.wqma.com). They've since moved to a track in Monroe.
It was renamed Ottodrome International Speedway when it was purchased in 2002. It switched back to it's original name of Capital City Speedway in 2006. I've also seen reference to it being named Ottawa Valley Speedway in 1993 and reverting back to Capital City in 1994. The track was built in 1961.
This was in high detail with no blurred faces when I posted it last week... it appears that google is replacing the high definition scenes with crummy fuzzy ones.
I don't get it either. As far as Chicago communities go, this one (Chicago Lawn) is about average. U.S. Census data puts this neighborhood's median family income at $47,000, and the crime rate is well below other south side neighborhoods.
The blue cart arrangement is fairly new. In the past, they put their recyclables in blue bags for curbside pickup. This has been on the Chicago news recently, so the streetview scenery may have been taken prior to the blue carts being rolled out.
This is located on 'Nitro Alley' - a new corporate park with dozens of major auto racing shops and vendors. I drove through here earlier this month. Several more buildings have gone up since the BEV footage was taken.
Now this is weird...
I've already posted this, but it doesn't show up in the nearby maps... http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/49000/
Both VGT links bring up the same location in Harrisburg, NC.
By the way, keep up the good work graphicwolf... nice to see another racing fan on here.
Coverage of Ayrton Senna's and Roland Ratzenberger's fatal crashes on ESPN in 1994: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC91X1nfU8U
This was the first Formula 1 event since 1960 with more than one fatality. No driver has died at an F1 event in the 14 years since then.
I've seen Dread Zeppelin a few times back in the 90s. Most of their songs are twisted reggae-rock versions of Led Zeppelin, Elvis, and Bob Marley songs, with a few original songs influenced by those sounds. Some of the most interesting concerts I've ever been to.
While it always hurts me to see historical race tracks close down, I'm glad to see the city of Asheville turned this into a useful facility without bulldozing the track. In addition to the velodrome, the land is now a park (Carrier Park) with a playground, roller hockey rink, and athletic fields.
Reminiscing race fans who visit can still see most of what was there. All too often, race tracks are torn down in favor of housing or commercial developments, erasing any clue of what...
The home rink of the NHL's Calgary Flames from 1980-83. Currently, it is the home of an indoor soccer team and is used for concerts and other special events.
For what it's worth, there is a floating green in Lake Michigan for 11 days each year at Milwaukee's Summerfest. A small barge is anchored 125 yards offshore as part of a contest awarding a new car or airline tickets to someone getting a hole-in-one.
Google Street View shows the dismantling in progress. http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=42.592843,-87.915009&spn=0.000928,0.002688&z=19&layer=c&cbll=42.592377,-87.914992&cbp=1,639.4253638691408,,0,1.16851627376123

After browsing the area, I'm sure these are part of a driving school, where replica cars are used. Several cars can be seen driving into the infield through the backstretch tunnel, something that wouldn't happen with an actual racing team's car.
A "Pittsburgh Trib" sign can be seen where the Clark sign once stood... http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&om=0&ll=40.448892,-80.008887&spn=0.000914,0.002688&z=19&layer=c&cbll=40.44845,-80.008811&cbp=1,344.86992554899973,,0,-18.812501936742325
It's the BOK Center, an 18,041 seat arena. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOK_Center
It will be home to minor league hockey, arena football, and NBA D-League basketball.
Comparing the birds-eye-view with the opening credits of the show, it appears that the actual house is the fourth one from the end of the block (two houses northeast of the one centered in the google thumbnail).
The red markings on the track tell me this is a driving school using a car painted like NASCAR'S #8 Budweiser sponsored Dale Earnhardt, Jr. car. The markings show a new driver the preferred path around the track. Great catch, kjfitz!
Sorry, didn't realize this was the same flagpole as a prior submission: http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/36471/
Taken from a different street, and obviously on a different day.
Looking for the race track, I typed in the address, and there he was - dead center in the north-view scene.
I've also seen some other fighter jets taxiing in the northern section of Tuscon International, so there may be other BEV in-flight sitings available nearby.
Thanks Kevin. A few nearby flags show that the wind is blowing to the north. Based on the shadows, it's morning, so I figure there's a good chance it's visible in another scene.
A few days ago, I looked at a dozen or so known launch sites in the UK with no luck, then I stumble upon this one. Go figure.
Yep, I drive by it a few times a week. It'll wake you up the first time you see it! I saw it yesterday and realized it wasn't submitted to this site yet.
