On July 25, 2011, a pilot and his passenger died in a plane crash in Lake Winnebago after he lost control of his Piper Cub when performing a "hammerhead" maneuver. They were in the area attending the Oshkosh EAA fly-in.

A small barge already in the area was used to lift the aircraft from the water soon after the crash.
