Building of Fort Gilkicker started in 1863 and was completed in 1871. It was intended to defend the deepwater anchorage at Stokes Bay. It was in military use until 1956 when it was handed over to the Department of Environment. It was purchased by Hampshire County Council in 1986 and used for storage 1987-1999.

Thanks, I have been trying to find interesting static targets lately although I can't resist good ship or an aeroplane now and then even if it might fly or sail away in the next Google Maps update. You might also have noticed that I'm somewhat anglophile...
