Now Museum and Nature reserve. During apartheid years was a prison colony for mainly political prisoners.

South Africa's first democratic President, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on the Island for 18 of the 27 years he served behind bars before the fall of apartheid.

The island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Most important history fact is missing: this is the island where Nelson Mandela was held for more than 27 years of his life.

It was actually 18 out of the 27 years of imprisonment.
