Under the reign of the Romans, the city was called Nova Trajana Bostra and was the residence of the Legio III Cyrenaica. It was the capital of the Roman province called Arabia Petraea.

The modern city has been built around the ruins of the ancient city. The ruins contain several buildings and its most notable building is a large open-air theatre.
