Aphrodisias was a thriving Hellenic and Roman city located in modern day Turkey. The area is now an archaeological site whose remains include the remains of an ancient Roman stadium and many other buildings.

The city was constructed during the Hellenistic period. The city fell to Roman rule from the 1st century to the 5th century AD. In the 1st century AD, Roman Emperor Augustus put the city under personal protection and many of the structures we see today are from this period.
