Bochcastle Roman Fort

Bochcastle was an ancient Roman fort located in Scotland. The fort is located near the modern town of Callander. The fort was established by the Romans around 85 AD as part of a complex of military instalations to protect them from the Scottish. The fort was built on the site of a recent Roman marching camp. The fort was in the shape of a playing card and had a mound surrounding it as protection.

The fort is thought to have been abandoned sometime during 90 AD when the Romans started to leave Scotland. The fort was not used again during later excursions to Scotland. Bigger forts and marching camps like Ardoch and Doune were also a factor to Bochcastle's abdonment.

The mounds of the fort are still clearly visible in the field it is located in. However, the former Oban and Callander Railway ran through the middle of the fort and therefore destroyed parts of it. The former railway line has been converted into a public path and provides a good view of the ancient mounds.
