Brook Street Unitarian Chapel

Brook Street Unitarian Chapel was built following the passing of the Act of Toleration in 1689.

The Act of Toleration allowed Protestant dissenters to worship in their own chapels for the first time in England.

The chapel and its small burial ground were built on land gifted by Isaac Antrobus a tanner in the town.

The congregation of the chapel settled on a design that made it as inconspicuous as possible and so that it resembled a private house or farm building as they feared that the rights given under the Act of Toleration might be revoked.

The chapel is still in use as a place of worship so those early fear have proved to be unfounded.
