The former Session House (Courthouse) and House of Correction (Prison) in Knutsford was built to the design of leading English prison designer George Moneypenny. The building was constructed between 1817 to 1819.
Moneypenny’s work was said to be terrific by which was meant that it struck terror into the viewer.
The central portico of the building is its most striking architectural feature with paired Ionic columns supporting a high parapet.
The House of Correction which was to the rear of the Session House closed in 1914 and was demolished in 1934. Whilst the Session House was used as a courthouse until 2010 when the Crown Court proceedings were moved to Crewe.
Today the building is Grade II Listed and has English Heritage No. 1378501.
