Knutsford is an historic town in the ceremonial (historically)country of Cheshire. Since 1 April 2009 it has been in the Cheshire East Council unitary authority area.

It is located 14 miles (23Km) southwest of the city of Manchester and 9 miles (14km) northwest of Macclesfield.

The town’s unusual name derives from Cuntesford (“Canute’s ford). The Danish King Canute according to legend is reported to forded the river Lily close to site of the modern town in 1016.
