The Colosseum / Colosseo, ultimately from the Ancient Greek word "kolossos" meaning a large statue or giant, is an elliptical amphitheater in the center of Rome, just E of the Roman Forum. It's the largest ancient amphitheater ever built, and is the largest standing amphitheater in the world. Construction began under the Emperor Vespasian in 72 CE and was completed in CE 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. Further mods were made during the reign of Domitian. The 3 emperors who were patrons of the work are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheater was named the Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium / Anfiteatro Flavio) by later classicists and archaeologists for its association with their family name.
