Maria Feodorovna, born as Princess Dagmar of Denmark, was married to Tsar Alexander III of Russia from 1881-1894 when he died. 1919 she fled back to her native Denmark after the Russian revolution and lived at Villa Hvidøre until her death in 1928 and she was interred here at Roskilde Cathedral.
She only had a hope and wish to get back to Russia near her husbands grave. In 2006 it came true for her after an aggreement between Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Russian President Putin and on September 28. 2006 her coffin came to St. Petersburg on board the Danish naval ship HDMS Esbern Snare and her funeral at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral.
