During the Gulf War, Masirah Island was used as a base - Camp Justice - for American operations from Oman and there was quite a large temporary presence of Americans.

Masirah Island was also used as the base from which the USA launched their attempt to rescue the hostages from the US embassy in Tehran after the 1979 Iranian revolution.

This is a former RAF military airfield now belonging to the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) which has played a vital part in numerous middle-eastern conflicts since it was established.
