Al Udeid Air Base is a joint Qatar Emiri Air Force and U.S. military installation located about 20 miles southwest of Doha, Qatar. Established in 1996 under a bilateral Defense Cooperation Agreement, it serves as the forward headquarters for U.S. Central Command and U.S. Air Forces Central Command, along with the RAF’s No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group. The base spans dual runways (each approximately 3,750 m long) and supports a large fleet of combat, tanker, reconnaissance, and transport aircraft, including F‑16 fighters, B‑1 and B‑52 bombers, KC‑135 and KC‑10 tankers, as well as various coalition aircraft. It hosts roughly 10,000 to 11,000 U.S. and coalition personnel and provides comprehensive logistics and war reserve material storage for regional operations.
Since its inception, Al Udeid has undergone continuous expansion and modernization, largely funded by Qatar. Upgrades include multiple dormitories, dining facilities, hardened command centers, and runway enhancements, improving both operational capacity and living standards. The base is critical for air campaigns over Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and counterterrorism missions, offering command-and-control, aerial refueling, and surveillance capabilities. It is also strategically significant in U.S.–Qatar relations, with long-term agreements in place and substantial investments—such as a reported $10 billion Qatari commitment—to sustain and expand its role in regional security.
