In the spring of 1800 Napoleon led his troops through the Great Saint Bernard Pass to retake territory (Cisalpine Republic) in Italy seized by the Austrians. Napoleon hoped to surprise the Austrians by taking this alpine route. Eventually on June 9th Napoleon's plane worked as he secured a decisive victory at the Battle of Marengo between Milan and Turin.
Napoleon's crossing is forever idealized in painter Jacques-Louis David's "Napoleon Crossing the Alps".
