On this spot Ned Kelly, an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader and convicted police murderer, was arrested on June 28. 1880.

He was tried October 19. 1880 and sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed November 11. 1880 at Old Melbourne Gaol.

Behind the sculpture of him in the armour made of timber and steel is a memorial stone.
