Made by two residents of the village to honor William Penny Brookes from Much Wenlock. In 1850 he created the Wenlock Olympian Games that ran every year in Shropshire that lasted until 1883.
In 1890 Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games, visited Brookes and by him got the idea of the Olympic Games that began in Athens, Greece, in 1896.
His birthplace is on the other side of the street at Much Wenlock Parish church. His grave is in the churchyard surrounded by a blue fence.
