Robert Smalls (4/5/1839 – 2/23/1915) was born into slavery in South Carolina and freed himself and others by commandeering a Confederate ship through enemy waters in Charleston Bay. Smalls then served the Union and after the war returned to South Carolina and bought his master's house. He also became a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina.
