Statue of Luis Eduardo Villegas López

The family of Luis Eduardo Villegas López are the owners of the famous Piedra de Penol rock on top of which his statue stands, He bought the rock that was worthless to the local farmers and built the now famous stairs on it.

The memorial plaque reads in rough translation:

June 03, 1917-July 19, 1996

A man who lived to embody a great destiny; with impetus, with tenacity and stubborn temperament, through rugged cracks and hollows, it achieved the titanic feat of conquering this coquettish, slender and imposing peak, a beautiful gift of nature, which God outlined in colors to the amazement and delight of our senses.
