Built in 1900 for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Hall was designed by McKim, Mead and White. The hall was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1999.
The architects hired Wallace Clement Sabine, a professor of physics at Harvard University who founded the field of architectural acoustics, as an acoustical consultant. Symphony Hall became one of the first auditorium designed in accordance with scientifically derived acoustical principles.
