Matthews Arena

Matthews Arena (StreetView)
This arena opened on April 16, 1910 and is the oldest active multi-purpose athletic building in the world. The arena has mostly been used for ice hockey and basketball. It was known as the Boston Arena for its first 72 years.

It held the first indoor ice hockey game in Boston and was the original home to the NHL's Bruins from 1924-28. The arena was also the original home of the NBA's Celtics, who played here from 1946-55. The New England Whalers hockey team debuted here in 1972 for one season before moving to Hartford (today's Carolina Hurricanes).

Over the years, the building has also been used for boxing events, concerts, ice shows, and pro wrestling shows. It has been renovated several times over the years.

Today, it is used by Northeastern University's hockey and basketball programs, as well as Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey, and local high school hockey.

The archway seen in this StreetView scene is the arena's main entrance.
