Altyn Emel National Park cover a colossal area of 4,600km2 (c.5000 hectares) which makes it larger than the Blue Mountains in Australia, or the County of Essex in the UK, or the State of Rhode Island in the US.
This area is said to have been named by Genghis Khan who called it “The Golden Saddle” which in Mongolian language sounds like “Altyn Emel”
The Park has a great diversity of of landscapes including mountain and sandy deserts. The Park also holes a great deal of historical significance.
In 2017 UNESCO listed Altyn Emel National Park in its World Network of Biosphere Reserves in recognition of its biological diversity, unique nature, as well as historical and cultural heritage.
