Built by sea and wind currents, the Curonian Spit is a ribbon of sand separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The barrier bar is a national park in Lithuania and Russia. As a protected area within a protected area, the Dead Dunes are 1 of the most dramatic and botanically significant features of this unique geological formation.
Ranging up to 60 m high, the Dead Dunes obscure 4 villages and 2 cemeteries swallowed by the shifting sands between 1675 and 1854.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
