The National Gallery of Zimbabwe, on 20 Julius Nyerere Harare, Harare, was first planned in the 1930's, however the National Gallery Act was not passed until 1953.
The competition to design the gallery building was won by Messrs Montgomerie and Oldfield with construction commencing in 1955. The building was opened by HM The Queen Mother in 1957 and was named of Cecil Rhodes, the Rhodes National Gallery, The gallery was renamed in 1972.
From its inception, Zimbabwean Art has been a cornerstone of the gallery's mission alongside hosting international exhibitions.
