From the Forsmark nuclear power plant the cooling water from two of the reactors is pumped through a tunnel beneath the bottom of the sea into the Biotest basin, an artificial 0.9 km2 large enclosure. Grids at the outlet prevent fish larger than about 10 cm from entering or leaving the basin. The cooling water from the third reactor ends in an open 1 km long channel leading to the same discharge point to the open sea as the Biotest basin.
