Terra Nova Expedition memorial cross

Terra Nova Expedition memorial cross (StreetView)
The Terra Nova Expedition was an expedition to Antarctica between 1910-1913. The trip was led by English Royal Navy officer Robert Falcon Scott with scientific and geographical aims that carried over from his Discovery Expedition from 1901-1904. Scott and his four companions reached the pole on January 17, 1912 having been beat by a Norwegian team by 34 days. The Nords, led by Roald Amundsen, hold the distinction of reaching the South Pole first.

Scott's entire party died making their way back through the Ross Ice Shelf due to blizzards and extreme conditions. Their letters and journals were recovered with a log of events leading to their deaths. The cross is a memorial to the men below who died.

Edward Wilson, Scott, Lawrence Oates, Henry Bowers and Edgar Evans.

Tennyson's line from Ulysses: "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield" is inscribed on the cross.
