A major incident was declared on Sunday 12th June in the Nechells district of Birmingham as a huge fire engulfed a recycling plant.
It was reported that a fire broke out in a premises adjacent to the Smurfit Kappa SSK Paper Mill at a approximately 19:40, however due to high winds the fire quickly spread and reached the mill’s recovery fibre yard.
At fire’s peak there were 110 firefighters and 30 appliances at scene and thick smoke billowed across the city. The fire is believed to have destroyed 8,000 tonnes of cardboard and papers at the site.
There were no reports of any injuries but as a precaution local residents were urged to keep their windows and doors shut to prevent smoke entering their homes.
