The ‘Christ the Work’ sculpture is mounted above the west door of Blackburn Cathedral.
The figure of Christ is mounted on a cotton weaving loom which acknowledges the significance of cotton weaving in Lancashire and the town of Blackburn particularly during the 19th century and early part of the 20th century.
The metal sculpture is the work of John Hayward who was perhaps better known for his stained-glass work and designed the original windows in the cathedral’s lantern tower. These windows were replaced, however, when the tower was rebuilt in stone in the 1990s.
