An Gorta Mor – The Great Hunger Memorial

An Gorta Mor – The Great Hunger Memorial (StreetView)
A bronze and stone monument depicting the separation of a poor, hungry Irish family due to ‘The Great Hunger’ of the mid-19th Century Irish Potato Famine.

The Bronzes were cast by Maurice Haron and the monument was dedicated by the President of Ireland, Mary Robinson on 23 July 1997 to mark the 150th anniversary of the darkest year (1847) of the ‘An Gorta Mor’.

Many poor and starving Irish family left Ireland during the famine and sought a new life in the United States with many immigrants settling in Boston, MA. The mass migration and the emptying of Ireland at the time of the famine has resulted in strong bonds between the Irish diaspora and the Irish nation.
