Doñana National Park - December 2023

On Wednesday 27th December 2023 the British newspaper, The Guardian, reported on a €1.4bn deal to protect a vast area of Andalucía wetlands which have been impacted by soft fruit producers draining the aquifers.

Under the deal £1.2bn will be spent to protect the wetlands environment, by diversifying the local farming economy away from its concentration on strawberries and raspberries.

The need for action was highlighted in a recent report from Spain’s national research council that had reported that the Doñana’s area was in a “critical condition” and the removal of the National Park from the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s green list.
