Eskişehir Midas Yazılıkaya (English: “inscribed rock”) Archaeological Site also known as Midas City in the Phrygian Region of Turkey, was the capital city of the Hittie Empire in the late Bronze Age when was city was known as Hattusa.
In 1800 William Martin Leake discovered the Midas Yazılıkaya monument although it was only in 1930s that the first systematic archaeological excavations were undertaken.
It is now believed that that the earliest Phrygian settlement at the site dates to the late 8th century B.C. and that after the fall of Phrygian empire the rock structures were used in the Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine Periods.
Hattusa was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in1986.
