Floyd Bennett Field was the major airfield on the New York side of the Hudson before the Second World War, second only to Newark Airport in the amounts of takeoffs and landings. It was used as a naval air station during the war, and was the base for many long-range anti-submarine sorties. It's now the NYPD's heliport.
