Cigar brand Hoyo de Monterrey means "Hole of Monterrey" which describes the low lying location of the plantation on the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martinez River.

The brand was started by Spanish transplant Don José Gener y Batet in 1865. The brand continues today on two fronts. The Cuban version is run by the Cuban government and Habanos SA and the tobacco grown in Honduras run by General Cigar Company.
