On 2 April 2021, a Taroko Express train operated by the Taiwan Railways Administration derailed in Hualien County, killing at least 51 people and injuring over 150. At the time of the accident, the train was carrying 488 passengers. The 8-carriage train derailed in a tunnel north of Hualien City, reportedly after a construction truck fell down a slope and crashed into the train.
