On 1/7/23, 5 Black police officers of the Memphis Police Department, severely beat Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, during a traffic stop. Nichols was hospitalized in critical condition and died 3 days later.
The officers claimed to have stopped Nichols for reckless driving. They pulled him from his car and used pepper spray and a taser on him. During the incident, Nichols managed to break away. When officers caught up with Nichols, they beat him for about 3 minutes, punching and kicking him in the head and striking him on the back with a baton while he was restrained.
