Koshoy Korgan is believed to have been a 12th Century Karakhanid citadel. Today the remnants of the outer perimeter mud walls remain impressive.

The site of the citadel was probably occupied continuously from the 8th century and only reached it peak some four centuries later.

At the entrance to the historical site there is a museum which contains artefacts from archaeological sites across the Naryn oblast.
