This is one of the locks on the Trent & Mersey canal which is known as Townfield Lock.
The 93 mile (150km) long Trent & Mersey canal links the rivers Mersey and Trent and to provide inland waterway route linking the ports of Liverpool and Hull.
The rise on this lock is 8 feet (2.43m).
Lock 45 is a double lock which allows two narrowboats to use the lock at the same time. This type of lock had the twin advantages of speed and saving water.
