On Tuesday 14th June 2022 The Guardian newspaper reported that Yellowstone National Park had on 9th June 2022 decided to remained Mount Doane as First Peoples Mountain.
The National Park Service was reported as having reached the decision as the former name was “offensive’ as US army captain Gustavus Doane for whom the mountain was named had led an attack in 1870 which killed 173 Native Americans.
The new name was the recommendation of the Rocky Mountain Council which was accepted ty the Wyoming Board of Geographic names and the National Park Service.
Mount Doane Renamed First Peoples Mountain.
