The Poor Knights Islands are 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Whangarei they have been uninhabited since the 1820s.

Offshore there is Marine Reserve and is one of the world’s leading dive centres, while onshore the islands are also a nature reserve.

The Rikoriko Cave on the Poor Knights Islands is a sea cave and one of the largest in the world. It was formed from a volcanic ‘gas bubble’ which was created during a volcanic eruption some 15 million years ago.
