Alcatraz Island is a small island located in San Francisco Bay, California, most famously known as the site of the former federal penitentiary, Alcatraz Federal Prison. Operated from 1934 to 1963, the prison housed some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and Robert Stroud (the "Birdman of Alcatraz"). The prison was considered escape-proof due to the frigid, strong currents surrounding the island.

Before becoming a prison, Alcatraz served as a military fort and detention center in the 19th century. After its closure as a penitentiary, the island became the site of a significant Native American occupation (1969–1971), which brought attention to Indigenous rights. Today, Alcatraz is a popular tourist destination managed by the National Park Service, featuring guided tours of the prison, lighthouse, and historic buildings.
