Remains of Roman Theatre

Leant on one side of the Pelasgian hill, nearby Piazza Cecco d'Ascoli, the Theatre dates between the first century b.C. and the first one A.D., period of last enlargements. Its presence is significant of the high cultural level of the town in the Roman age and it attests its high power on the surrounding territory. The largest diameter of the cavea was of 95 metres. Excavations were carried out in the thirties and fifties which brought to light the radials of the cavea in opus reticulatum, the orchestra corrisponding to our stalls, the praecinctio or semiannular aisle between the stands and the summa cavea, that is the superior part of the stands. Next to the pulpitum we can see fair ruins of an apsis space, which probably had a complementary service function.
