The Ara area has served as a base for diesel-powered submarines in the 60's. Later for Nuclear submarines in the 70's. Nowadays, about a dozen nuclear-powered submarines are waiting for de-fueling and dismantlement. This facility also has small storage capacity for solid and liquid radioactive waste. You can see old Type 641 "Tango-class" submarines and two Type 671RTM "Viktor III-class" SSN submarines waiting to be scrapped.
