Lying 65 km off the coast of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, roughly 80 k, north of Abu Dhabi city, and 103 km west of Dubai, it belongs to the Emirate of Sharjah.

Designated a Ramsar Wetland on 12/2/13 as the Sir Bu Nair Island Protected Area.
