North Mountain, WV is the site of a former Presidential Emergency Facility known as COWPUNCHER. COWPUNCHER was constructed in the 50's and 60's as part of a larger effort to create the infrastructure necessary for the continuity of government in the event of a nuclear strike. Prior to its deconstruction, COWPUNCHER was a large white tower with a microwave communication relay station that connected to the White House, Site R (Raven Rock), Camp David, Mt Weather, and other crucial government facilities.
