The Ballaharra Stones

The Ballaharra Stones (StreetView)
The Ballaharra Stones were discovered in 1971 at the Ballaharra Sandpit. The site where the stones were discovered was excavated by Shelia Gregeen a local archaeologist.

Shelia’s excavations revealed a two-chambered tomb which was dated to 2300 BC, using carbon-dating techniques. The tomb is thought to have similar origins to those at Cashtal yn Ard and King Orry’s Grave. It had been formed from six large stones, however, two of these stones had been destroyed due subsequent activity.

The owners of the sandpit donated the remaining stones to the local Commissioners, and it was the Braddan Parish Commissioners who had the stones erected in the village of St. John’s where they remain.
